NEVERMORE Frontman Says Retrospective DVD Is In The Works
July 25, 2005Justin Donnelly of Blistering.com recently conducted an interview with NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On the overwhelmingly positive response to the group's new album, "This Godless Endeavor":
Warrel Dane: "I know! It's kind of freaking me out! I haven't read a bad review yet either. And you know what, I'm fully convinced that the one bad review we will get will come from here in Seattle. We always get bad reviews here in our hometown because the one newspaper here (The Seattle Times) will review it, and they’re really against metal. I remember when they reviewed 'Dead Heart In A Dead World', and they equated that album to eating a really bad cheeseburger late at night when you're super drunk. What they meant by that was that it tastes really good at the time, but in the morning when you wake up, it's only then that you realize the horrible mistake you've made. That was basically the review for that album! (Laughs)"
On when they realized they had created something special with the new album:
Warrel Dane: "It hadn't really hit us what we had done when we had finished recording. I mean, we knew we were doing a really good record, but it all comes together in the mixing really. And we weren't there for the most part because we trust Andy Sneap so much that we left it in his very capable hands. But I have to say that the final result of 'This Godless Endeavor' is well beyond our expectations."
On the problems surrounding 2003's "Enemies of Reality":
Warrel Dane: "'Enemies of Reality' was a difficult album to make. We were all going through a difficult time in our lives. We were all really fucking angry people, and I think that kind of shows on that album. The remix of the album (handled by Sneap prior to working on 'This Godless Endeavor') obviously sounds better. But to me, that's the really odd thing about that album. I find it really strange that the production on that album got reviewed more than the songs did. Looking back on it now, we could have played it safe and written another 'Dead Heart In A Dead World', but that would have been predictable. We've never been a band that's done anything predictable. We don't necessarily try and be unpredictable; it simply comes out that way! (Laughs) If anybody expected 'Dead Heart In A Dead World' Part Two with this album because we're working with Sneap again, they're definitely not going to get it this time around either."
On the band's upcoming DVD:
Warrel Dane: "We are working on a DVD right now. It will contain a lot of live stuff, from both the past and the present. We have a documentary crew that is following us around while we're on tour, so it's still some time off before we have it all together. But what I can say for certain is that it is in the works."
